Church of Saints Peter and Paul, 1883 Parish of Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Moscow

HABEMVS PAPAM

Good evening, brothers and sisters.

You know that the conclave was meant to give Rome a bishop. It seems my brother cardinals found him practically at the ends of the earth. But here we are, and I thank the diocesan community of Rome for welcoming us.

First of all, I would like to pray for our retired Bishop Benedict XVI. Let us all pray together for him, that the Lord may bless him and the Virgin Mary may watch over him.

Our Father…

Hail Mary…

Glory be to the Father…

And so, we set out on this journey, we—the bishop and the people—the journey of the Church of Rome, which holds primacy in love amongst all the Churches. A journey of brotherhood and love, of mutual trust. Let us pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world, that there may be great brotherhood within it. I wish for you that this journey of the Church, which we are beginning today — and my Cardinal Vicar, who is here, will assist me — may be fruitful for the evangelisation of this city, which is so beautiful. And now I wish to impart my blessing upon you. But first, I would ask you for a favour. Before the bishop blesses the people, I ask you to pray to the Lord that He may bless me. A prayer from the people for a blessing upon their bishop. Let us pray in silence; pray for me.
