24 December – Christmas Eve
Morning Holy Mass for Advent will be celebrated at 9.00.
On this day, some peoples have a tradition of abstaining from meat. The celebration of Christmas begins with an evening meal. First, a prayer is said, followed by a reading from the Gospel according to Luke (2:1–7) about the Nativity of Christ. This is followed by the breaking of the Christmas bread (wafer), exchanging festive greetings and the giving of presents.
According to the traditions of some peoples, the Christmas meal consists of up to 12 vegetarian (mainly fish-based) dishes.
It is not customary to drink alcohol during the Christmas meal. After the meal, everyone goes to church for the solemn midnight Christmas Holy Mass.
